Astana public transport in the UITP focus

April 16-17, 2018, Mohamed Mezghani UITP Secretary General visited Astana, capital of Kazakhstan.

During the visit, Mohamed conducted meetings with Asset ASAVBAYEV, Chairman of the Transport Committee of the Ministry of investment and development of Kazakhstan and Asset ISSEKESHEV, akim (mayor) of Astana.

The meetings were also attended by representatives of the Kazakhstan companies-members of UITP Bekmyrza IGENBERDINOV, Chairman of the Board of "Astana LRT" LLP and Marat URAZBEKOV, Deputy General Director of "Directorate for construction of LRT", as well as by Yussup KHASSIEV, head of the UITP offices in Moscow and Astana. The meeting put ahead for discussions the issues of public transport development in Astana.

"For us, the transport system is one of the most important priorities; it must reflect the level of the capital. After all, transportation affects such elements as modern technology, human resources, security, economics and other. We are interested in effective cooperation with your organization, since we are committed to the best practices, best examples of the implementation of transport projects," said Asset ISEKESHEV, mayor of Astana.

UITP assists the development and implementation of transport projects in various ways including creation of expert groups, involving specialists, experienced in implementing projects in their cities all over the world. For example, Mr. Mezghani informed about the experience of the city of Moscow that in 2015 appealed to UITP for Peer Review - an expert assessment on the essence of the city's transport policy. A project team including UITP colleagues, specialists from Vienna, Madrid, Singapore, carried out the work. Later in 2016 the Peer Review on electric transport perspectives was implemented in Almaty/

Mr.Mezghani expressed readiness to assist in the implementation of transport projects in Astana, in particular with the construction of light rail network.

"Astana is a fast-growing city, and many state bodies offices are present here. And the public transport sector, apparently, is developing well, "Mezghani said. -Also, you launched the construction of LRT. Our organization has a lot of experience in this sphere. And we would like to contribute to the implementation of this project. "

During the meeting, it was decided to establish cooperation to evaluate the city's integrated transport scheme in the long term, taking into account the integration of development plans of city and transport.

Also Aset ISEKESHEV invited the Secretary General of UITP to take part in the Forum of Mayors of cities of the countries of the Silk Road, which will be held on July 2 - 3 of this year in Astana.
